Hollywood, CA - "The Other Guys," the cop buddy movie starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg from Sony Pictures beat "Inception" at the box office this weekend. The comedy pulled in $35.6 million and put to ease any concerns over Ferrell's box-office duds after the disaster that was "Land of the Lost." There's still enough interest surrounding "Inception" to drive the Warner Bros. movie to second place with $18.6 million. The "Step Up 3D" didn't make anyone want to dancetaking in only $15.5 million in its first weekend.

If you think some cops are cocky or a little wierd, these guys define both terms in the new movie The Other Guys, now in a theater near you.

The Sony Pictures flick, starring Will Ferrell, and Mark Wahlberg, sped to the top of the daily boxoffice rankings with an around $13.2 million from its first day in movie theaters on Friday. and it will tickle your funny bone and then some.

It is not your ordinary shootem' Up copy movie like Bruce Willis, who survives gun blasts and exposions, and steps on broken glass barefoot. No, this is a comedy about a day in the life of two mismatched New York Detectives trying to take a bite out of crime. There are so many stars and so many action scenes, it's unstoppable.

Terry Hoitz's past mistakes in the line of duty and Allen Gamble's reluctance to take risks have landed them the roles of the "Other Guys", disgraced New York City police detectives relegated to filling out paperwork for cocky hero cops Danson and Highsmith. The mismatched duo must look past their differences when they take on a high-profile investigation of shady capitalist David Ershon and attempt to fill the shoes of the notoriously reckless officers they idolize.             Los Angeles —In a new report released today, the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) projects the U.S. economy will grow by 3.1 percent in 2010 and by 2.9 percent in 2011 after contracting by 2.4 percent in 2009. The report also shows that employment will grow through year end 2010, and the nation’s unemployment rate will decline slowly, reaching the nine percent range by the end of 2011.

            According to the “2010-2011 Economic Forecast and Industry Outlook: Mid-Year Update” report produced by the LAEDC’s Kyser Center for Economic Research, California’s recovery will be led by tourism, international trade, technology, and television and film production.

            “We are seeing a measured recovery under way,” said the Kyser Center’s Chief Economist and report co-author, Dr. Nancy Sidhu. “Automotive and housing-related purchases and business investment in equipment will contribute to the recovery as well, but consumer spending holds one of the keys to the overall economic outlook.”

            Tourism will see an increase in 2010 and 2011, as more people visit the region and stay in hotels in the area. The outlook for the Los Angeles region’s large tourist industry is improving, albeit slowly. Most local theme parks, such as Universal Studios Hollywood, Knott’s Berry Farm and Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventures, have new attractions opening this year or plans for major park improvements. With the opening of the new hotels at L.A. Live, the City of Los Angeles has booked several major business shows. In Los Angeles County, the hotel occupancy rate is about 69.7 percent compared with 65.5 percent in 2009.

The region’s famed motion picture/television production industry got off to a good start this year as well. Domestic box office receipts were up strongly over the year, the state film production incentive plan was well received, and television networks, both broadcast and cable, produced a number of pilots and series. Jobs in the entertainment industry started to rebound at the end of 2009, and for 2010, an increase of 16,900 jobs is estimated in the motion picture and sound recording sector in Los Angeles County..

Los Angeles — Jack Kyser, the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation’s (LAEDC) Founding Economist, today announced his retirement effective June 30th after nearly 30 years as the chief interpreter of the L.A. County economy. Kyser will retire from full time work, but will remain as a consultant to the organization.
The LAEDC’s economic research department, the Kyser Center for Economic Research, will continue under the leadership of Chief Economist, Dr. Nancy Sidhu, to provide critical economic analysis and insight on topics related to the L.A. Heart “Stringz” tugged at the American Heart Association’s Power of Legacy Soiree

HOUSTON – Nuttin’ But Stringz’ international urban rock violin duo Damien and Tourie Escobar brought music lovers to their their feet Friday night(April 26, 2010) at the Hobby Center’s Zilkha Hall. The Emmy award-winning brother’s unique fusion of rock urban hip hop and classical music touched the hearts of nearly 300 people, who gathered in support of the American Heart Association’s Power To End Stroke movement, an initiative that empowers people to reduce their risk for stroke and educates communities on the importance of prevention. In between electrifying sets, the brothers shared their rise from the rough and dangerous streets of Jamaica Queens, NY, as well as their close connection to heart disease. The pair’s mother, aunt and grandparents have all suffered from various forms of heart disease and stroke, while Damien Escobar himself has a murmur that is checked regularly.

One hundred percent of the funds raised for the Power of Legacy Soiree, chaired by Merele Yarborough, will directly impact the health initiatives of the African-American community in Houston and increase awareness about the risks, signs and symptoms of stroke, the nation’s number three killer, which impacts African-Americans more than any other ethnic group.

Honorees that evening included: Ralph Holmes of Aetna,Kirk Franklin and Judy and Wayne McConnell, who were recognized for their support of the Power to End Stroke campaign since its inception four years ago. Each of the honorees encouraged the audience to lead by example, and to make a pledge to incorporate simple lifestyle changes into their daily lives, which could significantly reduce the risk of stroke. , “

Los Angeles, CA - Just got off the phone with the manager of Nuttin’ But Stringz, who is stranded along with thousands of airline passengers in Europe due to the Iceland Volcano eruption. Not since 9-11 or Mount Saint Helens (May 18, 1980, Washington State) have so many planes been grounded. TMZ got an exclusive interview this week with Tourie and Damien Escobar, brothers who make up the internationally renown Nutt’ But Stringz, who performed live at Dancing with the Stars on ABC. Taking a break from the show TMZ caught the urban rock violinists just outside the DWTS studios.
When asked who they thought was the best dancer? Both replied in harmony, “Kate Gosselin. She’s a good woman, a good Mom and the most sexy,” Tourie and Damien answered. TMZ’s Harvey Levin (shaking his head), back in the newsroom, was blown away when he heard Tourie Escobar tell the TMZ news cameraman that He’s ” in love with Kate Gosselin, and would love to date her.”

The event is the brainchild of Lissa Levin Guntzelman, a television writer/producer ("Mad about you," "WKRP in Cincinnati") and breast cancer survivor. “I wanted to do this for myself, my family and other breast cancer victims,” said Guntzelman for the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation’s MAMMOJAM 2010. “I’m a TV writer/producer, but also an 18-year breast cancer survivor and my mother died of breast cancer at age 60 so my experience and entertainment industry connections will help fight the disease.

Louis Van Amstel will take center stage, demonstrating his Louis’ Dance Blast moves for the crowd to follow, including dance pros, and students from his Sherman Oaks and Beverly Hills dance classes – and Jonathan Roberts will dance and share the dance floor with the Renowned Surgeon Dr. Susan Love.

The event will feature music from the 70’s to Salsa and Disco to Today. Club DJ Prophecy. Dedications of songs will be offered on seven video screens around the dance floor. Knatz, who is the first female executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, oversees the daily operations and management of the nation’s number one container port. Under her leadership, the Port has reduced air emissions and health risks while expanding capital development programs to accommodate the port’s future growth as a premiere Pacific Gateway and national economic engine.

Ripple Effect of Lost Revenues in Southern California Could Cost More Than 9,280 Jobs and $1.5 Billion in Economic Output, Along With Reduced Contributions to Guild and Union Pension Plans

Los Angeles – The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) has unveiled a new economic study entitled “The Economic Implications of Low Cost DVD Rentals” which illustrates the negative impact that low cost, new-release DVD rentals could have on the Entertainment industry and the Southern California economy.

The LAEDC study, which utilizes the Redbox model of $1 DVD rentals available at the street date, shows the ripple effect of $1 billion in lost revenues to the domestic home video industry in the Southern California region – the entertainment capital of the world – would lead to an additional $500 million in reduced economic activity. The loss of motion picture production in and around Los Angeles would result in the loss of more than 9,280 jobs with annual earnings of almost $395 million, according to the LAEDC’s study.

“The economics of the motion picture industry are based on exclusive release windows which allow price differentiation - that is - some earlier transactions take place at higher price points," said Gregory Freeman, vice president of Consulting and Economic Policy for the LAEDC. "Redbox, or any other distributor that weakens the release window model, could reduce overall industry revenues. Lower revenues will likely lead to lower production activity, hurting the Southern California economy.”

Of the 9,280 jobs, more than half of the losses will occur in the Information Sector, the LAEDC found. In addition to motion picture and sound recording industries, this sector includes publishing industries, radio and television broadcasting, telecommunications industries and Internet service providers. Other industries impacted will be retail trade, accommodation and food services, health care and social assistance, professional, scientific and technical services, and manufacturing, among others.

If you want to do social media you need to engage your target audience and treat them intelligently. That was the overriding message at a sold-out Entertainment Publicists Professional Society (EPPS) crowd at a media workshop on “How To Do Social Media.” It was sponsored by the International Cinematographers Union Local 600, Hollywood, CA.

“It is possible to measure ROI,” but according to Panelist Sally Falkow, Expansion Plus, “Campaigns take four to six weeks of research and strategy and can cost from several thousand dollars to millions. “We don’t go by retainer, but more by the project, because it really depends upon how much time is involved and how long your project runs,” she said.

Falkow was joined by a handful of social media experts, who offered tips and resources on “How To Do Social Media.”

“Movie fans and visitors love behind the scenes marketing of movies,” said Vice President Wayne Bennett of MOVIESET (www.movieset.com), which is based in Vancouver, B.C. The free membership site helps market movies via images, on-the-set interviews and constant blogging.

Bennet, a 20 year TV and movie production veteran, uses his social media skills to assist television production and publicity departments.

“You have to type what’s going on behind the camera for fans all over the world,” Bennett explained. “It might be the director of photography on how he lit the shot, or in the case of Peter Jackson in King Kong, before Facebook, YouTube and Twitter; he was literally posting photos of prop guys, costume fittings with actors, on the scene location scouts activities and video blogs. Jackson built this buzz that topped a million fans, who were already engaged in the process and the movie by the time he finished it for distribution.”

The panel also briefly talked about Widgets, which can be placed on a site or blog, allowing interaction with the visitor without leaving the site. For example: the Red Cross might have a widget on a blog, where you can donate directly to

Panelists also recommended the funneling all your social media sites such as Facebook, Myspace, LinkedIn, Twitter on one portal such as www.tweetdeck.com, where you can organize your feeds and tweets.

“Nonprofit organizations do not tell there story very well,” said President Larry Eason, DotOrgpower, Los Angeles. The digital strategy and communications firm helps dot orgs harness the web and new media to achieve their goals. He works with cause leaders to expand their sense of what is possible Online. He claims to be an evangelist for the power of Online story-telling to move the public, donors and influentials. “You need to treat your audiences intelligently when telling your stories,” explained Eason.

Eason pioneered the use of new media for the Public Interest Research Groups (PIRGs) starting a first-of-its-kind in-house media center, which was acquired by Virilion where he worked with cause and corporate clients such as eBay and Georgetown University.

“You need to target your community groups, mobile interaction, action platforms, and set your goal,” said Mac McLean, Click Communications, North Hollywood, CA. “Before forming Click Communications in May, 2007, McLean handled theatrical promotions, worked at a national advertising agency and did publicity for major studios.

Some panelists noted that 60 percent of the marketing campaigns are spent on social media strategy versus 40 percent on PR and Marketing. “It is one more layer of client management, but for a restaurant the goal is to get people in the door,” said Caroline Rustigian Bruderer, CEO of K-LINE 7 Co., Orange County.

While everyone thought the best way to market your film is social networking and the best marketing tool is Facebook with more than 400 million users other tactics surface.

“Every movie or TV project has a core audience, and the Internet is the most strategic way to get to those people," explained MOVIESET's Bennett. "This allows you to do the EPK and other advertising much later. The concept is the new promotion, and the sooner you engage your audience the sooner they are going to grab onto it, and follow the different phases to the point where you get to your last news release or airing. There will be much more information that surfaces to the top of Google than there would be by putting out a short release over six weeks."

Entertainment companies and filmmakers are leveraging the power of social media by marketing their films to international audiences and building loyal audiences and communities around their work. Another tactic mentioned are RSS feeds, which in layman’s terms stands for real simple syndication or officially “rich site summary for delivering regularly changing web content. All agreed that to increase web traffic PR pros need an RSS feed on their client's website or blog to whoever subscribes or wants the content.

The awards were sculptured by Antonio Banderas the children at the Shriners Hospitals for Children with the guidance of The Art of Elysium volunteer/actor/sculptor David Grieco. Joel Madden said, “The artists at The Art of Elysium” should get an award, too.

The first awards show came off without a hitch and the live music performances enhanced an inspiration evening. It was an evening of entertainment and celebration that honors charities, celebrities and the tremendous work that they do. ‘This event and movement should inspire the next generation to be noble throughout their lives,” said Mansour. One of the highlights of the musical performance that brought the house down was Monica, introduced by Bill Bush. LA Times Launches Envelope with more voices, images and stories about awards

Los Angeles, CA - Several hundred mostly Los Angeles Times writers, editors and staffers from LAT packed into a launched party on the top floor of a swank West Hollywood Hotel to launched theenvelope.com and awards season coverage.

“When we launched the Envelope a couple of years ago, we didn’t have as much video, we didn’t have as much breaking news and mainly covered Hollywood events and film festivals with all the guilds,” said Associate Editor Patrick Kevin Day. “We also have a lot more voices like Paul Gata the circuit blogger.”

TheEnvelope.com, which is billed as the "ultimate awards site," has helped the Los Angeles Times to significantly broaden its coverage of the entertainment business over the past year,” according to Film Critic Betsy Sharkey, formerly the editor.

The new editor is Sally Hofmeister, who introduced additional writers and staffers at this week’s (10-05-09) launch party.

The Envelope's purpose, according to promotional materials, is to raise awareness of award contenders, drive box office numbers, boost DVD sales, influence voting considerations of Academy and guild members and target consumers.

The Envelope receives five million visitors during the off season and much higher numbers during the high season – between November and February. It features interactive photo galleries, video clips of red carpet coverage, celebrity podcasts, blogs and a "Buzzmeter."

This writer asked Day how new media has impacted coverage in the weekly printed version of Envelope and the Online version.

“I think speed is the biggest thing,” said Day. “We have a host of competition from various websites trying into the entertainment awards area, so we have to keep an eye on them constantly and we can’t fall down at any point and be at the top of our game.”

"Don't call me, email works best, because I work out of my home literally blogging all day," said Elizabeth Snead, contributing editor of The Envelope. “I don’t go to as many mixers and late night parties as before, because now I have people I can send to them, so just being here is a rare thing for me.

Elizabeth Snead is the former fashion editor and entertainment writer for USA Today prefers "10 days advance notice of story pitches," since she covers three events a night. "I might not get back to you right away, but I do read my emails," she said.

For almost two years now, Snead has been writing for the http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/thedishrag blog. She focuses on news, celebs, awards, politics and pop culture.

For example there are sections with videos and celebrity images on VH1's Hip Hop Honors, 2009 'VH1 Divas' Arrivals, 2009 Latin Grammy Awards Nominees, 2009 ALMA Awards Arrivals and Red Carpet Rewind: 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards.

"There is Academy news and breaking news on the site. We've created these multimedia models on each page for photos. We also host podcasts of nominees or anyone associated with the awards show," said Kapsch, who is now working for Zap2.it.com, as editorial director.

Kapsch was the former managing editor of AccessHollywood.com, as well as a producer of TV sites at ABC, NBC, Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment and Viacom.
